Guitar amps, as sound generators are completely different animals than HiFi.

All the attributes we consider to be in a good HiFi amp, will destroy a good guitar amp.

An ear for what "is guitar" is useful too. I had a crash course in it myself. Depending on genre, the different "tones" of amps can be good or bad. An amp with painfully prominent mids and highs are great for rock, but a Blues or Jazz musician would cringe.

There are no hard and fast rules. One reason there are so many boutique and mainstream amp manufacturers. The quest for tone is as numerous as stars in the sky!

Cheers!

Hi, welcome! Smiley

A CD player will have far too much drive. Your best bet is to use a guitar.

Do you have a speaker or 8 ohm dummy load to test the voltages at least?

Cheers!

New here, dont know much about geetars but I just built a champ clone for my son,.His ax is in the shop, how can
I test the amp without a guitar? Can I use something like a cd player, how do I get input and output to 1/4" plugs?
Any tips on smoke testing, havent checked voltages yet since I dont have a load setup.

Yup! Smiley

Cap quality makes a huge difference as to "Q" of the circuit.

Cheers!

So ..... the eq is only hooked up to the 4R -- the speaker hot is EQ in and the Spekaer gound is EQ out?? is that right?? Is it on the 4R or one of the other taps? thx.

Heya Moonbird,

Given that I have never tried 4R, I can't say for 100%.... I've just kept it tapped at the 8R position Smiley

Cheers!

As promised -- (or threatened  Evil) Here I am on your site bugging you about the very cool paramentric EQ for this amp. But I can't wade thru the OT?? How would you (could you) hook it up to a "normal" 3 tap (4,8,16 ohm) OT? thx much.
